Statutory Medical Insurance
In Germany, Statutory Medical Insurance (Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung or GKV) and Statutory Long-term Care Insurance (Pflegepftichtversicherung) are mandatory for all employees who earn less than a certain income threshold (EUR 66,600 in 2023).
Employees who earn above the income threshold have the option to enrol in Statutory Medical Insurance or to opt out and take out Private Medical Insurance instead.
Enrollment
Employees are required to submit their GKV membership certificates within five days from the hire date to payroll to ensure contributions are paid to the right Krankenkassen. Employees with dependent children should complete this Proof of Parental Status Form and attach the relevant supporting documents to benefit from reduced Long-Term Care contribution rates. Your contribution reduction will be backdated to the beginning of the month in which the form is submitted.
Contributions
Contributions to the Statutory Medical and Long-term Care Insurance are split between Databricks and the employee as follows:
- Databricks contributes between 7.3% - 8.8% of the employee's gross salary
- Employees contribute between 7.3% - 8.8% of gross salary up to the salary ceiling (EUR 59,850 in 2023) per year, depending on salary and type of insurance (Krankenkassen).
